Safety Tips for Using and Storing Gas Cylinders
Published August 15, 2024 in Safety
Inspect Equipment Regularly
Before each use, check cylinders, hoses, and regulators for signs of wear, corrosion, or damage. Replace any parts that show leaks or cracks. Perform a soap-and-water test on connections to detect gas leaks—bubbles indicate an issue that must be addressed immediately.
Proper Storage Practices
Store cylinders upright in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and combustible materials. Keep them on stable, level ground with protective caps on valves. Never store cylinders indoors or in basements where gas accumulation poses a risk.
Handling and Transportation
When moving cylinders, use suitable trolleys or carts and secure them to prevent tipping. Ensure valve protection caps are in place. Avoid dragging, rolling, or dropping cylinders, as impacts can damage valves or cause leaks.
Emergency Procedures
Familiarize yourself with the steps to take if you suspect a gas leak: turn off the cylinder valve, evacuate the area, and contact your supplier or emergency services. Do not operate electrical switches, open flames, or use phones near a suspected leak.
Use Certified Suppliers
Only purchase and refill cylinders from reputable suppliers with SANS certification. Qualified technicians will ensure that fittings, hoses, and regulators meet safety standards and replace any components that fail inspection.
